He attended public schools in Marshall, Texas, where he graduated high school with honors. He enrolled in Wiley College in Texas where, in 1934, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. In 1937 he earned a Master of Science in Physics from Ohio State University and a PhD. in physics from Cornell University in 1949. His main area of study was meson production in nuclear collisions and later Radio Astronomy.
