Could Nevada Be It?

Could Mitt Romney finally strike it big in Nevada ? The answer to that question could be answered tonight as we will await the poll results. What could be the more interesting thing to watch is the aftermath from tonight’s results . The more lingering question is, does this turn into a three man dog race with Ron Paul finally putting an end to his Republican Presidential bid and also an end to his political career? All the answerers to these questions may seeming be answered tonight.

Ron Paul has vowed to fight to the end of this Republican primary. Ron is on record saying that he does not plan on running for public office again. This chapter looks be closing faster and faster with every stroke.

The thing that I have noticed is the Ron has done something that I have really have not seen any Presidential candidate do at all during this run. Ron has tapped into the young and fairly educated(college students) arena. This is something we see done more often by the Democratic Party. He has tried to invigorate a base that have been deprived by more ideological substance then I have ever seen. Although I may be wrong, I very rarely see an influx of Republican focus on college campuses and young voters around the country. This is why we often see college students and graduates lean towards the left as they leave school. So, to you Ron Paul “Good Job”!

All is Done

It seems as if Mitt has this thing wrapped up in Nevada. By recent polling they have Mitt up by almost 23 percent, it does not seem like we will see any luck happen here in the luckiest place on earth. Mitt has shit Blackjack and is on a track to keep on winning. What we could learn from this, is the following and confidence about Mitt’s candidacy may prove to be golden after all. Although I am still not sold. Mitt will win here in Nevada, but it seems as if Newt and Rick will be in this at least ”Super Tuesday”(March). The fight goes on.

Will Trump have a Trump effect ?

You know what, this Republican story line seems to get better and better with time. Just as fine wine does. The biggest problem in this endorsement is I am not sure is people take the Donald serious at all. At one point he was seen all over stage with Newt and now he hops on the Mitt bandwagon. This to me has no substance or meaning at all. The biggest question that comes to mind is one that you can go in deep thought about. Can you trust this endorsement that comes from a guy that was with Newt, then with thinking about an Independent bid and now he stands next to Mitt as if he was the President of the Mitt Romney fan club all along. YEAH OK!

The last thing that one has to find evidence in, is the relationship between Mitt and “The Donald”. The common subject around cities all over America the 99% against the 1%. There is no relation to the common American in this endorsement. No matter what side you are with you have to think that this will soon be a subject that will not look good on Mitts behalf. When you think of elitism , this is a prime example. You have to seriously think do they have the common intrest of putting America back on track or is it just sitting back and continuing fatting the 1%’s pockets. Go figure, food for thought!

Jitney is not only a good play by playwright August Wilson, but it depicts a real-life story in African-American history. Jitney, the eighth in Wilson’s ‘Pittsburg Cycle’, tells the story of a community coming together when regular cab drivers will not travel to the Pittsburgh Hill District in the 1970s. The play dramatizes the lives of men hustling to make a living as “jitneys”, which are unofficial cab drivers. Directed by Ruben Santaigo-Hudson, this is an opportunity to see the fine work of August Wilson on display from Jan. 29-Feb. 19 at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ.

Unheard Voices had the opportunity to chat with actor Brandon Dirden, about the play, life, and the character he depicts – Darnell Williams AKA Youngblood.

On his character Youngblood:
He’s your brother, he’s your cousin, and he’s your nephew. He’s has a big heart but doesn’t necessarily make the right decisions. But his heart is always in the right place. He’s quite mature. He’s dubbed Youngblood because he’s the youngest member in the crew.

On Wilson:
He’s documented this story on a living drama. So [people] can see in action how it’s going down. This is how real people are affected by these policies … It’s brilliant!

On Jitney
It is fantastic slice of life in this community of Pittsburgh in the 1970s .. with a lot soul.

An unarmed Bronx teenager has been shot dead by a police officer in front of his mother.

Ramarley Graham, 19, was shot in the chest after being chased by the police into his family’s apartment building on Thursday afternoon.

Moments before the fatal shooting, officers said they spotted the teen adjusting his waistband and thought he had a gun, reports the New York Daily News.

‘They chased him into the house,’ his mother Constance Malcolm, 39, told the Daily News.

The teen was not carrying a gun and no weapon was found at the scene. He was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

NYPD officers tried to approach Graham, after witnessing him making a drug deal in street. But the teenager ran away and followed by police as he headed toward his second-floor Williamsbridge apartment.

Once inside, Graham ran to the bathroom apparently trying to flush marijuana he had on him down the toilet.

The police initially claimed a struggle had followed in which the teen was shot in the upper left chest.

However, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the New York Post that he did not believe the officers had struggled with the suspect before he was shot.

According to Mr Kelly’s account, as Mr Graham tried to flush drugs down the toilet, one of the officers yelled: ‘Show me your hands! Show me your hands! Gun! Gun!’

That officer then shot him with his service weapon, a 9mm Glock.

‘We need to continue to gather facts at this juncture,’ Mr Kelly told the newspaper.

‘We see an unarmed person being shot. That always concerns us.’

The two officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on restricted duty, reports the Post.

Instead of channeling his energy into negative places, Harold focuses on writing. Unheard Voices chatted briefly with Harold on his love for writing and how he got started.

How long have you’ve been writing?
I’ve been writing poetry for the better par of 5 years and its been my outlet for things that are usually left unsaid.

What inspires you to write?
I write because so many people put on a mask and play the tough Guy role. Why show the tough Guy and hide the love? This is me not being that tough Guy but that loving person sharing what’s real

Who are some of your favorite authors/writers?
I absolutely can’t read enough books. I travel through many different genres of books, from history to fiction to political to fantasy and mystery and suspense. My favorite Poet would have to be Langston Hughes since I read Life ain’t no crystal stair I wanted to write like he did.

What is your style of poetry?
I don’t have a specific style of poetry I write about love I write about life. I write about God’s second most precious gift that is woman and how they should be treated. I also write about freedom and of course my faith in the Lord.

Our Storm
They way my mind moves
Is like a raging storm
With you lie the most important elements

As the rains shower
This beautiful sound
A heart so perfect
That my love has found
The thunder rolls as a reminder
That God made you for me
My queen loving, gentle
Caring and serene
Take me away to the awesome place
Every time I lay my head in your lap
Our storm begins to rage
Taking me away
Leaving me with one care
You my sweetest love
Holding and warming from the night air
Rain only magnifies your beauty
As it trickles down your face
Come closer babygurl
Come and give me a taste
Let me taste that passion
That lies in your soul
And you can taste my passion
Our love can be whole
I hear the rough waves
As they keep tearing away at the beach
I hear the cool sand crunch
With every step of our feet
Flowing with those winds
Lighting cracking in the sky
Kodak moments made for God’s eyes
Still loving our storm
The serenity it vibes
Because through every storm
True beauty lies…..

Singer David Peaston who had several hits in the 1980s and 1990s including “Two Wrongs” and “Can I”, died from complications of diabetes.

Peaston’s niece Neuka Mitchell announced his death on Thursday, saying the crooner was surrounded by his wife and sons when he passed away at his home in St. Louis. — St Louis Post-Dispatch

Peaston was born in St. Louis with deep family musical roots. His mother, Martha Bass, was one of the Clara Ward Singers. His older sister, is a noted singer whose single “Rescue Me” reached No. 1 on R&B charts and No. 4 on pop single charts in 1965.

Following in his family’s footsteps and after a brief stint as a schoolteacher, the musician headed out to New York where he paid his dues doing session work for fellow gospel and R&B artists.

He first received solo attention after winning several competitions on TV’s Showtime at the Apollo in the late ’80s, particularly on the strength of his stellar rendition of “God Bless the Child.” Such performances landed Peaston a recording contract with Geffen Records.

In 1989, he released his debut album, Introducing…David Peaston, which burned up the charts with the soulful piano-driven ballad, “Can I?” and the funky “Two Wrongs (Don’t Make It Right).” That success landed the R&B smoothie a coveted slot supporting Glady Knight on tour, and a year later, he snagged a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist.

Unfortunately Peaston didn’t gain nearly as much traction with his sophomore LP, 1991′s Mixed Emotions, which failed to crossover beyond the urban market and he began a slow fadeout from the spotlight.

In 2006, despite the loss of his legs, the soul man mounted a comeback with the release of his album, Song Book: Songs of Soul & Inspiration. — E Online

The world was shocked when news spread that legend Don Cornelius was found dead with a gun shot wound to his head.

Don Cornelius’ son has come forward, saying he spoke to his father hours before his death.

Don Cornelius’ son claims the late “Soul Train” creator phoned him just hours before he shot himself in the head — describing the last-minute outreach as a “call of urgency.”

Don’s son Tony Cornelius wouldn’t specify what the call was about — telling Gayle King on “CBS This Morning,” his dad’s health was failing and he was “unhappy about some things” in his life.

Tony told Gayle, “You have to be in a person’s shoes really to understand. Obviously, me being extremely close to him, I could tell that he was uncomfortable.”

Tony added, “But our family could never know that he would — how uncomfortable he really was.”

Everett Sheppard, 25, who was charged with murder and sexual assault in the Oct. 17, 2008 killing of Victoria Madison, was found not guilty on all counts.

In a stunning verdict, Sheppard has been acquitted of all charges of beating to death and sexually assaulting a 9-month-old child.

The verdict, after just four hours of deliberation over two days, was met with surprise and visible disgust by several of the police detectives and Essex County Prosecutor’s Office investigators who were in the courtroom, and who had been on the case. Two of Victoria’s relatives sobbed as the verdict was read, then left the court without comment.

No one from Sheppard’s family was in court for the verdict although several relatives had attended the week-long trial. Sheppard was escorted back to jail, where he is expected to be released.

At least two female jurors walked out of the courtroom wiping away tears; a third looked at Sheppard as she left and wished him good luck.

Sheppard was charged with killing Victoria while the child’s mother, his girlfriend at the time, was out of the house getting lunch from Burger King. The mother, Sheila Troutman, testified at trial that the baby had been healthy when she left the house that day, but when she returned, Victoria was unconscious. An autopsy revealed bruises and fractures about her body and head, and clear indications of sexual assault.

Sheppard confessed to the crime in a videotaped statement, which his lawyer said was coerced by police investigators. — NJ.COM

Philadelphia, PA – Vanessa Watson, known professionally as Vanessa Banks, was murdered in what law enforcement officials say was a murder-suicide.

Watson, 26, was a up & coming model who walked for runaways, posed for magazines, and product promotions around the country.

Before her death, she was living in a house with her three children, her sister, her grandmother, and her 31-year-old boyfriend, Louis McCrae. On Tuesday morning she drove McCrae to the train station. As they sat in her SUV McCrae shot Watson and then turned the gun on himself.

Relatives say there were no signs of trouble.

“We didn’t expect nothing like that. She took him and embraced [him], like she embraced everybody,” Vanessa’s aunt Sharon Watson said. – ABC Philadelphia

Vanessa had a following on twitter and facebook, and adopted the nickname “Ms. Banks DoDat”.

Her family says the “DoDat” name symbolized her go-getter attitude.

“It was horrible. He took my daughter, a mother of three, away from our family, a very tight and secure family and it hurts deeply,” Vanessa’s father Richard Watson said.

“To leave this earth like the way she did, it’s a sad thing. She’s going to be very missed by all of us; she was like the rock of the family,” Jackie Watson, aunt of the victim, said.

Born on April 27, 1945, August Wilson grew up in the Hill district of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His childhood experiences in this black slum community would later inform his dramatic writings, including his first produced play, Black Bart and the Sacred Hills, which was staged in 1981.

Then, in 1984, August Wilson was catapulted to the forefront of the American theatre scene with the success of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, produced at Yale and later in New York in 1984. The play was voted Best Play of the Year (1984-85) by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.

Wilson continued to work in close collaboration with Lloyd Richards of the Yale School of Drama, and by early 1990′s, had established himself as the best known and most popular African-American playwright. Wilson also set for himself a daunting task–to write a ten play cycle that chronicles each decade of the black experience in the 20th century. Each of Wilson’s plays is a chapter in this remarkable cycle of plays and focuses on what Wilson perceives as the largest issue to confront African-Americans in that decade.

His second play, Fences–set in the 1950′s–tells the story of Troy Maxon, an illiterate garbage collector who has become embittered by a white-controlled system that has denied him the baseball stardom he feels he deserves. Fences opened on Broadway in the spring of 1987 to enormous critical acclaim and earned Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize.

In April of 1988, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone opened on Broadway, again to enormous critical acclaim. This play–which documents the 1910′s–tells the story of Harold Loomis, a black man cruelly imprisoned for seven years by the white authorities for an unknown offense. Finally free, Loomis sets out in search of his wife Martha who he hasn’t seen in ten years. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone was voted Best New Play of the Year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.

The Piano Lesson–set in 1930′s–opens with the arrival of Boy Willie at his sister Berniece’s house. Willie dreams of buying the same Mississippi land that his ancestors once worked as slaves, but in order to raise the capital for this purchase, he must convince his sister to part with a family heirloom, a piano that is both a reminder of the family’s enslaved past and a tribute to their survival. The Piano Lesson was named Best Play of the Year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It also earned Wilson his 2nd Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as a Drama Desk Award.

In April of 2005, Wilson finally completed his ten-play cycle when Radio Golf premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Two months later, he was diagnosed with liver cancer. And on October 2, 2005, August Wilson passed away at the age of 60.

Wilson’s other awards include the New York Drama Critics Circle Award (1985, 1987, 1988), the Whiting Foundation Award (1986), the American Theatre Critics Award (1986, 1989, 1991), the Outer Circle Award (1987), the Drama Desk Award (1987), the John Gassner Award (1987), the Tony Award (1987), the Helen Hayer Award (1988), and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1987, 1990).

Wilson’s play Jitney, is currently showing at Two River Theatre in Red Bank, NJ.

Actress Maia Campbell talks about new life, career, and sobriety.

Many of you may remember Maia Campbell from the late 90s sitcom, In The House. You might also remember a video that surfaced of Campbell that didn’t paint her in the best of light. In the video, she appeared to be intoxicated and drugged up while sitting in a car yelling at the men filming her. The video caught national attention prompting ‘Pray4Maya’ trending topic on twitter.

Well now it appears those ‘dark ages’ are now behind her, as she is speaking about her life, and a book she is trying to push. The 35-year-old says she’s been clean for two years and is ready to make a comeback.

On Her Life:
I’ve been sober for two years, and a lot of people can’t say that. I’m timid, shy and broken a little bit by some of the responses [online], but then again so much support from the people saying “No! She’s none of that.” Real friends stepping up … And just showing me who the real people were in my life. It helped me find myself and find out that there’s a real true artist inside of me–that no matter what obstacles may come, he’s not going to let you fall, and he’s not going to let you down.

I started ministering to myself and looking at my heart … Finding my voice … And it just made me stronger. If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger. Like Drake says, “It’s far from over…” I listened to the music that people were making, and it kept inspiring me. I started making music, and I just stepped out on a limb. My mom died … So much has happened. I miss people in my life. I miss LL [Cool J]. Debbie Allen came back to the community … And for once so many miracles. I swear so many miracles!

About the video and her career:
I went on to do movies, and nobody talked about it, and that hurt me. I did a movie called ‘Rim Shop’ after Katrina had happened in New Orleans. We went down there, and that place looked a mess, seriously. We shot a film out there just to help those people, to bring revenue in and just show our support to their situation. Then, I did a gospel kind of Tyler Perry play called ‘Friends and Lovers’.

I’m trying to reach out to Tyler Perry about one of the mom’s latest novels. She was nominated for a Noble Peace Prize for literature. [It's called 72-Hour Hold] it was a story about her and my relationship, and I wish that Halle Berry would pick it up and read it if you’re listening. I would love for her to play the lead character.

There are so many goals and dreams that God has put in my heart while I’m sitting here sober. And I’m not doing the things I use to do. The way they attacked me on the Internet–it was BS. These guys said they were going to shoot a video for my music. I was trying to work independently–and I’m not saying that I was clear headed to believe them, but I was not doing what the heck they said I was doing. They blasted me with the words they put on the screen and just made everybody look at me another way. And I’m like, “That’s really messed up if anybody believes that!” But a lot of people didn’t. And they knew that and came to my rescue and said, “Let’s just get you all the way right.”

Her plans for the future

“I went to Spelman, but a lot of HBCUs named a month after my mom for mental health month because she supported the mental health … Her book was about a girl with a bi-polar mental health issues and her relationship with her mom. It was kind of a bougie little girl that was prive to every freakin’ thing, raised up in The Hills and just had it like that. Nobody took the time to deal with her psychologically. And that’s what ’72-Hour Hold’ is about. That’s the next project that I want to basically get out to producers and Tyler Perry to see if anybody is interested in pushing it.

I want to attach myself to anything-–reality shows, movies–but positive characters. I don’t want to play the crazy girl like, ”Craig, Craig let me borrow your VCR!” It’s too much of that in life, and we got kids out there … I wish they would take that type of stuff off the Internet because the kids have to go to school and deal with reality of that, and it makes it hard for them to learn.”

It sounds like Maia is headed in the right path. It would be interesting if the book was actually picked up to become into a movie.

The death of Don Cornelius sent shock waves around the nation. It was reported the “love, peace, and soul” man died from an apparent suicide. While we may not know as of yet the full details of Don Cornelius death, one thing for certain is that he is not alone.

“Suicide is a major, preventable public health problem. In 2007, it was the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for 34,598 deaths. The overall rate was 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. An estimated 11 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death.”
