A petition against XXL Magazine claims the urban magazine promotes assault on women.
In a recent video posted on XXL’s website, rapper Too Short talks about the know hows for young boys to turn a girl out. In the video he states “When you get to late middle school, early high school and you start feeling a certain way about the girls… I’m gonna tell you a couple tricks. A lot of the boys are going to be running around trying to get kisses from the girls… We’re going way past that. I’m taking you to the hole”
Since his comments spread throughout social media and the media as a whole, the magazine, its editor-in-chief and Too Short have come under intense scrutiny.
Too Short and XXL Magazine has since apologized. The video and his column has been taken down as well, but some still want justice.
A petition has surfaced claiming the urban music magazine promotes assault on women.
In a culture where 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18; in a society where someone is assaulted every 2 minutes; with 2/3 of victims committed by someone known by the victim and 38% of rapists being either friends or acquaintances of the victims, and 15 of 16 rapists will never spend a day in jail, we stand together in condemnation of this video. The sanctioning and normalization of violence against women and girls stands squarely in opposition to creating a just and humane society. This video represents yet another assault on women and girls throughout society in its promotion of sexual violence, in its acceptance of the daily denigration and sanctioning of violence against women and girls.
While it is clear the petition wants Too Short & XXL Magazine to be held accountable, it also calls for the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, Vanessa Satten, to be terminated.
We are appalled by the promotion and acceptance of sexual violence in this video. We are appalled that this video was disseminated, further contributing to a culture of sexual violence. Too Short should and must be held accountable for his deplorable rhetorical violence. Ultimately, however, the decision to post this video sits with the magazine’s EIC, Vanessa Satten. We, therefore call upon, Ms. Satten to be removed from her post. In the name of justice, in the name of decency, and in the name of our children, we call for her immediate removal and an accounting for the ways in which XXL treats women.
Being the Editor-in-Chief of XXL Magazine is a woman, I am surprised this was approved when it came across her desk. If you know Too Short, he is known for his sexual and racy lyrics toward women. He was always controversial and now? Let’s just say violent images and words against women is never acceptable and this petition is right on.
