The 44-year-old hip-hop overweight lover collapsed in front of his L.A. home and died unexpectedly leaving the hip-hop world in total shock. A pioneer in hip-hop, Heavy had massive hits including “Now That We Found Love.” He also wrote and performed the theme song for “In Living Color” and appeared as an actor in the movie “Life. Weeks later it was reported Heavy passed away from pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Conrad Murray began trial on September 27, 2011 for involuntary manslaughter over the death of Pop King Michael Jackson. Following an intense six-week trial, the jurors quickly returned a verdict, finding Murray guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Conrad Murrary was sentenced to the maximum of four years in prison.

Reginald was a 25 year old former college football star who was growing his career as a life and fitness coach. On the early morning of January 14, Reginald was involved in a dispute with a cab driver for an unpaid cab fair. In an attempt to prove he could pay, he removed his clothing and headed to his condo only to realize he had been locked out. Upon return to the cab, and a dispute with the driver the LA Pacific Police Unit was called and arrive on scene in minutes. Upon arrival there was a confrontation between the officers and Mr. Doucet, who was in boxers only. As events continued, the officers and Mr. Doucet ended up at the entrance of his condo. During the physical altercation in the entrance one of the police officers felt it necessary to pull his gun from its holster and fire two shots, point blank range into Reginald’s neck. Before calling for emergency crews to respond they “detained” Reginald. Mr. Doucet was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after. The fight for justice continues as LAPD recently ruled the shooting was justified.

A group of 8th students at Long Branch,NJ Middle School used the instrumental of the song ‘I Like It,’ by Enrique Iglesias to write their own song ‘Bullying We’ll Stop It’ to make their community more aware of bullying and the impact it can have. The video received national attention allowing the students to be invited to the White House.

The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in at least 100 years unleashed walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfing towns, dragging houses onto highways and tossing cars and boats like toys, apparently killing hundreds and forcing the evacuations of tens of thousands.

Troy Davis was convicted in 1989 by a Savannah, GA jury for the murder of an off duty police officer named Mark MacPhail. Davis sat on death row for nearly 20 years and maintained his innocence. For years, organizations and political leaders fought to stop the execution of Davis. Davis execution was delayed, however the Georgia State Board maintained its reasoning and Davis was executed on September 22nd.

The Occupy movement is an international protest movement which is primarily directed against economic and social inequality. The first Occupy protest to receive wide coverage was Occupy Wall Street in New York City’s Zuccotti Park, which began on September 17, 2011. By October 9, Occupy protests had taken place or were ongoing in over 95 cities across 82 countries, and over 600 communities in the United States. As of December 20 the Meetup page “Occupy Together” listed 2,751 Occupy communities worldwide.

Tierra Morgan was found dead in a stream in Wall Township, NJ still strapped in her car seat. Tierra’s mother reported the toddler missing after the father, Arthur Morgan, didn’t return the child after a scheduled visit. The case received national attention as Arthur Morgan ran and was found approximately a week later in San Diego, CA.

Jhessye was reported missing on Oct. 11. The girl’s mother, Jerice Hunter, 38, told authorities she left the child in the care of her other children while she ran some errands. She said the girl wandered away from her siblings and was missing when she arrived home. Jerice Hunter has since been a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance. Authorities now believe Jhessye Shockley’s body is in a landfill.

Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant football coach for Penn State, is accused of molesting boys during his years at Penn State. According to the indictment, assistant coach Mike Queary, who was a graduate assistant, said he walked in on Sandusky sexually molesting a then 10-year-old boy. The next day Queary reported the incident to coach Joe Paterno, where he told another official. Apparently, there was no action that took place after the incident as the those failed to alert the police. After allegations re-surfaced, coach Joe Paterno resigned from his job causing an uproar amongst the Penn State community. In November 2011, Sandusky was arrested and charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse of young boys over a 15-year period. If convicted, Sandusky faces life in prison.

When an old contract expired in July, NBA owners locked out players when no agreement could be made. As a result, the preseason was cancelled as the whole season was in jeopardy. NBA owners and players finally came to an agreement. The NBA season officially started on Christmas Day.

Amy Winehouse quickly rose to fame in 2006 after releasing the album “Back to Black” whose blend of blend of jazz, soul, rock, and classical rock was a commercial hit. It won five Grammy’s, making Winehouse a household name.
