Officer Who Shot Oscar Grant is Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter

The jury has reached its verdict in the trial against former BART officer, Johannes Mesherle, accused of shooting unarmed Oscar Grant on a train platform on New Year’s Day 2009.

Johannes Mesherle testified he mistakenly shot and killed Grant, when he reached for his gun when he meant to reach for his taser.

The story is still developing.

Voluntary manslaughter carries a sentence of 3 to 11 years; involuntary manslaughter 2 to 4 years. As for the minimum, if Mehserle is convicted of involuntary manslaughter, he could be sentenced to probation.
