LONG BRANCH — When Mayor Adam Schneider earned his hard-fought sixth term Tuesday night — sending Councilman Brian Unger from the governing body where he cast himself as the loyal opposition for his single term — the mayor planned to spend the days following his victory expressing his gratitude to residents who nominated him for his third decade in local public service.
At the same time, however, Schneider authorized Freehold lawyer Vincent P. Manning to move quickly to file a defamation lawsuit against Unger and the councilman’s Union County campaign consultant Pat Politano for their 11th-hour attempt to link Solomon Dwek — a disgraced Ocean Township land speculator who has pleaded guilty to $50 million in bank fraud — to what the Unger campaign sought to characterize as the mayor’s ethically challenged management of the city.
